If we're supposed to take Jesus seriously, why don't Christians?

There should be a lot more amputees and eunichs in the U.S., but not surprisingly, there are very few. And of the ones that there are, people don't ume they were following the words of Jesus as written in the bible, they ask "what happend to you?" as if the amputations aren't self-inflicted. So, if Christians don't take God/Jesus seriously at his word, why should anyone else?
