I wondered since 1959 if this was fact or just publicity, Now I'm going to ask the pros.?

In the old movie BEN HUR starring Chariton Heston, during the chariot race, in one scene a man falls out of one chariot and is run over by the chariot behind. It shows the man flopping up in the air as it is trampled by the horses and then run over by the chariot. It is a wide spread rumor here in Texas that the scene is real and was a tragic accident caught on film. It was left in the movie as a tribute to the dead stuntman. Does anyone know for sure if this is true or false?
